Effects routing configuration

This is how I have configured the routing of my effects in order to have the optimum order of signal processing in combination with my Marshall/Luciano tube amp:

Most of the pedals are sitting between my guitar and the pre-amp of my amplifier. But since I often use a bit of thickening from my pre-amp drive channel it is highly important to have the Delay behind that drive channel in order to have the delay repetitions sound as thick as the original. So therefor it needs to sit in the effects loop (with a -20dB send attenuation circuitry). The same applies to my volume pedal, which, for swell sounds and cut/boost purposes, needs to sit as close as possible towards the tube power amp, though, in front of the Delay for the swell effects. The reverb perfectly sits behind the Delay pedal.

Effects setup

Below how my guitar effects setup looks like. The pedalboard with most of the effects in the middle, and just a few units left and right added to it. Compact, clearly situated for ease of use, and highly effective. Whatever I need, it's all right there under my feet. And.. all true bypass!

The pedals explained:

Mad Professor Forest Green Compressor
Since it is not only a great working compressors/sustainer, also the first stage is a good buffer for my passive Seymour Duncan Antiquity guitar pickups. I am using this compressor in the sustainer setting, so that the attack remains fairly as original. This way it contributes to my basic sound, so have it always on, providing me the buffering at the beginning of my pedal chain as well. The jack input has been moved so that the pedal fits in my pedal board and I can easilly plug in and out my guitar cable.

Vox V847 Wah
The original wah pedal, though modified to True Bypass and a LED is added to show whether it's on or not, always an issue with wah pedals. Also some switches on the side alow me to change to the vintage Dunlop Cry Baby characteristics, or select other inductor types.

Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer
The legendary overdrive, which I have upgraded and modified. The original smooth sounding JRC4558D opamp has been put in, some components have been exchanged with higher quality ones, and I have added some clipping circuitry combinations selectable by a switch on top. You won't find a better sounding TS-9 than this one. It always works great in combination with the clean as well as the overdrive channel of my amp just to drive and raw it up a little (more). Also a True Bypass circuit has been added, but without any cosmetic changes! The unique Luciano Relay True Bypass Circuit uses the pedal's original footswitch for triggering a relay. This way the bypassed guitar signal does not go through any electronical components and the relay's gold plated contacts guarantee high quality and flawless switching. The original tone is 100% preserved.

Marshall Guv'nor Overdrive/Distortion
Since I made some component upgrades I just LOVE this pedal! So great for a the more aggressive overdriven sounds with a true Marshall bite, though still smooth and very 'open'. In combination with my Luciano amp or a plexi Marshall this brings you straight to the Gary Moore sound.
My settings: Gain and Bass at 2 O'Clock, Mid at 12 O'Clock, Treble at 8 O'Clock, Level at 10 O'Clock.

Mad Professor Stone Grey Distortion
For heavy 'fluid' distorted sounds with loads of sustain. The great thing about this pedal is that it keeps the character of your guitar intact somewhat. Play it with your Strat, and with the Gain at max as I do, you will still hear a Strat.

Boss OC-2 Octave
Favourite with many bass players, I use this one for weird soloing, but also for fattening up the groove. This, for example is how I play the 'Real Mother For Ya' groove while doubling the bass player: (sample to come)
Also this pedal contains the Luciano Relay True Bypass Circuit.

Boss PS-6 Harmonist
So nice for playing solos and doubling or tripling up the notes with those that fit the arrangement perfectly. Modified to True Bypass with my invisible relay circuit as well.

Pearl PH-03 Phaser
I have been having this pedal for over 25 years, and it will never leave my pedal board. So great for Lesley-ish rotary speaker sounds. The original Pearl bypass circuitry was even worse than those from Boss or Ibanez, so I have modified it to True Bypass.

Ibanez FL9 Flanger
One of the greatest flangers around, I use it not too heavy so that it's still nice for soloing. Again, modified to True Bypass with the Luciano True Bypass Circuit.

Ernie Ball EB 6181 VP Jr. Volume Pedal
A perfect size pedal with an very nice feel to it. I have added a potmeter for Minimum Volume Adjustment, which is inside the pedal and reachable from the front. This is my standard setting, with the pedal at 0% for normal volume suited for chords and riffs, and up to 100% for soloing which is effectively something like 15dB louder. I fixed a footswitch with LED on/off indicator on the side so that I can instantly switch the pedal to the original configuration (from 0% to 100% volume) which I use for nice swell sounds. The added options give me perfect control over my volume right there under my foot, whatever the song needs.

T-Rex Reptile Tape Delay Simulator
Such a nice smooth delay, with a slight filtering and modulation in the delayed repetitions, just like how it should to be keep it all very natural. Being part of my basic sound, I have it switched on most of the time with chords and solos to make my sound spatial in a subtle way.
I have replaced the modulation footswitch by a normal switch to avoid switching it off accidentally, and added a blue LED to show very clearly when the pedal is on.

Eventide Space
Being highly inspired by the sound of Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland (listen to the 2nd half of this live version of Trouble). So I use this thing for only one setting: the awesome Blackhole Space Reverb!

Luciano Power Supply
I built this one myself together with my pedalboard, it's a multiple regulated 9V and 12V power supply unit for powering all my effects units plus amp switch on the stage floor. By fully seperated power supply regulator stages the risk of digital units contaminating the supply of analog pedals is avoided.
